Craft is Self Care
When l worked in the fashion industry my life was stressful. My day was filled with computer screens and hectic timelines. Everything was urgent all the time. At the same time, I was single and trying to date online in New York City. Not exactly a soothing task. Needless to say, I needed self-care. Naturally, I took up crafts. Making things with my hands gives me joy.
I put aside the well planned time-consuming projects that I was trained to design in art school. Instead, I decided to experiment. The process of making was more important than the outcome. I made some ugly shit that will never see the light of day. But I also made some beauty. No one was going to admonish me because I missed the mark by making something unimpressive. I wasn’t rushing around like I was whenever I left my Brooklyn apartment today head into Manhattan. In fact, time escaped me and that was okay. This work was for me. Craft was my staycation escape when money was short. Or when I was between freelance positions. I sought solace in making. I was able to decide what I wanted to do without anyone else’s input. Keep in mind that the things you create are personal. They are yours. Enjoy the process over the product.
Here are some crafts kits and workshops that are perfect for self-care.

What is blackwork?
Blackwork embroidery is a traditional form of counted-thread embroidery that uses black thread, typically on white or light-colored fabric. Originating from Spain and popularized in England during the 16th century, it often features geometric patterns, repeating designs, and intricate floral or scrollwork motifs. While black thread is the most common, other colors can also be used. The style is characterized by its contrast, simplicity, and emphasis on patterns rather than large areas of filled color. Blackwork is often used to decorate clothing, household linens, and accessories.
