Me On Flowers
I don’t really care for floral patterns. It could stem from my mother (pun intended) who dislikes most floral patterns. The ones I like are Marimekko or Orly Kiely or something from Anthropologie. In terms of fine art, I am a huge Georgia O’Keeffe fan. But majority of the time, I don’t care for florals. I know this might upset some people; a woman artist whose number one motif isn’t floral. Some floral motifs are gorgeous but the vast majority are subpar.
In my fashion design days, I was always irritated that every fall would bring runways of floral prints. It wasn’t the prints that irritated me, it was that the trend reports would always state that florals would be in for spring like it wasn’t the trend EVERY spring. Where is the variety though?
I like flowers. I love my garden. I just think women get floral patterns pushed onto them like the color pink. Its funny, I am pretty feminine in nature. I like pink. I like good floral patterns. I love unicorns. Those are often things that are indicative of girlhood. So what’s indicative of womanhood? Shouldn’t I grow out of hearts, stars and florals at some point? I have seen women’s underwear with all of these patterns and it looks the same as a little girl’s underwear options. If we want to stop being infantilized, then we should start with our foundation garments.
Yes, I love creating geometric patterns. I love using bold colors. These are more me. They feel more adult too IMO. I personally want to wear this.
