I love the textural aesthetic of hand painted textiles. I recently started painting textiles for my craft booth. You can see my past post about my booth transformation. Seriously, I never considered painting my own signs. Like most people, I thought signs should printed by a printer and tablecloths should be bought from a retailer. In other words, I thought that anything handmade was unprofessional. Ironic huh? I make things with my hands and teach people to do so. I had started making printed textiles as an experiment. Just trying something in my design process. I enjoyed the process and the outcome. Yes, it could be cleaner but I think that will come with practice. I decided to make my signs and banners for my booth hoping to attract customers and really communicate my brand. I never felt that the tablecloths in the market and vinyl signs ever fit my colorful, modern aesthetic. Recently, I had a space in a maker fair that stated that vinyl signs were not allowed for its vendors. I guess I’m not the only one who thinks they look a bit sterile.

Anthropologie has some of the best visual merchandising in its stores. They often use everyday materials and upcycled “junk” in beautiful to convey a feeling or theme. I love creative window display. After perusing through craft booth ideas on Pinterest, many of which resulted in “shabby chic” styling, I started looking for window displays as inspiration. And also wedding backdrops. I found one pin that sparked the idea of painted textiles. From there, I decided to make my own.
