Found My Tribe Zipper Pouch

Me excited to show off my new pencil pouch.

I created a zippered pouch using the “Found My Tribe” print design. I named the print such because I thought it looked like African shields in a row. It is a confluence of West African and mid-century modern Western European influences which is how I think of myself as an African-American. I am the sum of all my ancestors and influences. That got real deep, real quick didn’t it?

After designing this gorgeous print digitally, I played with various color combinations working within a limited palette. This project uses my Sunrise Collection version with colors inspired by early morning sky. The colors of the sky inspire me each and everyday. Maybe because the sky is a constant and its what everyone in the world has in common. This is the second of two Sunrise colorways. The first Sunrise colorway is here. My other colorways for this print include Midday, Twilight, and Twilight 2.

The fabric was printed by Spoonflower on cotton poplin ultra fabric. The colors were true to my original design. I made a skirt with it (I promise to share it in a future post). Since I had a few scraps, I decided to sew a couple of zippered pouches. I was delighted to discover that the print colors perfectly matched the red chambray fabric that I bought for a dress sewing project (that I have yet to make). I think the “Found My Tribe” print makes a great accent fabric for small projects like this. But for all my bold folks out there, rock it all over yo’ body! I love when people wear bold prints. They are not afraid of being seen.

Whether you want to make a bold statement or just add a bit of color to your life, “Found My Tribe” can fit your needs. You can buy it on Spoonflower in a number of fabrics for as many yards as you want.
